Under the Aegis is thrilled to share that Brook-Lynn Norkie’s striking work The Wrong Van Riebeeck (2024) has been officially acquired by the Iziko Museums of South Africa, marking a significant milestone in the artist’s career and a bold new chapter for one of the country’s most historic art institutions.

The acquisition was unveiled as part of their new exhibition REFLECTIONS, the landmark exhibition inaugurating the reimagined Iziko Old Town House Museum and Michaelis Collection. This renewed vision breathes contemporary life into one of Cape Town’s oldest cultural spaces, creating a dialogue between the Old Masters and the new generation of South African artists.

Norkie’s The Wrong Van Riebeeck stands out as a pivotal contribution to this dialogue. Through her distinctive visual language, the artist challenges established symbols of colonial legacy, turning them inside out to reveal new layers of meaning, critique, and humour. The work’s inclusion in Iziko’s permanent collection ensures that this conversation continues—inviting future audiences to confront the myths that have shaped South Africa’s cultural landscape and to imagine new, inclusive narratives.

This artwork can be seen at the Iziko Old Town House Museum, 149 Longmarket St, Cape Town CBD.
