Klop Klop is an ongoing visual project aimed at immersing and educating viewers on the colourful and culturally rich tradition of the Kaapse Klopse, Tweede Nuwe Jaar, and all the heart that goes into it. At its core, the project is a vibrant celebration of Coloured culture in the Mother City. It is both an intimate exploration and a stylised tribute that captures the lived experiences of Klopse team members while placing them in a heightened, grandiose space that honours and uplifts their creativity and cultural identity. Through striking editorial photography and documentary-style filmmaking, Klop Klop presents performers in their full regalia, adorned in bold makeup and brightly coloured costumes.
The project seeks to encapsulate the joy-filled essence and vibrance of the Klopse while pulling back the curtain to reveal all the dedication, spirit, and love that goes into keeping the history alive. Klop Klop is a visual ode to coloured identity, both celebratory and reflective, offering insight into the artistry of the tradition and the complex, often painful history from which it emerged. It creates space for pride, storytelling, and cultural reverence, reminding viewers of the beauty found in both the spectacle and the struggle.
