This week, we’re shining a light on Tusevo Landu, a Congolese-born artist whose work explores identity, culture, and the human experience. Born in 1997 in Kinshasa, DRC, Tusevo started out at Artists Proof Studio before deciding to continue developing his practice independently as a self-taught artist. He works across painting, printmaking, drawing, and mixed media, using these different approaches to express how he sees the world around him.

Much of Tusevo’s work reflects on the challenges of injustice and discrimination, while also celebrating strength, heritage, and hope. He often includes traditional African masks in his pieces — particularly those used in Congolese coming-of-age ceremonies — as a way of connecting his art to cultural roots and the shaping of personal identity.

For Tusevo, art is a way to start conversations. It’s how he processes experience, tells stories, and explores what it means to exist between cultures. His work invites viewers to think about how history and identity shape the way we see ourselves and others.

Now based in Cape Town, he continues to develop his practice and share his perspective through his paintings and mixed media works.
His piece, A Stillness, Seasoned with Hope, is currently showing in the group exhibition As Tides Change, on view until 4 December 2025.
