Mongezi Gum

1970

Mongezi Gum was born in Langa and was passionate about art from a young age. After moving to Johannesburg, he studied drawing, sculpture and printmaking. He earned his diploma in Fine arts in 1994, from the Johannesburg Art Foundation. He has exhibited at the South African National Gallery, Artscape, AVA, Everard Read, Roots Art Gallery and 16 on Lerotholi. Gum depicts truthfully the energy of South African township life.

His artworks have popular appeal, with vivid and animated feelings of hope. His condent charcoal markings provide easily recognisable imagery of everyday life and context to the simple acts of the people of his township, Langa.
