Adegboyega Adesina
1998
Adegboyega Adesina (b. 1998-) was born in Lagos, Nigeria. He is known for his unique figurative painterly style that holds strong identity with the art of body painting using acrylics on canvas, with the possibility of storytelling inspired by the communal relationship he shares with his environment. This painterly style is an approach to capture the interaction between the subject matter and its environment. His works and narratives are often metaphorical by reconceptualizing real life scenarios, memories and experiences exploring themes such as cultural identity, spirituality, fantasy and love. Growing up he used art as a tool to aid his understanding of his school teachings and fairy tale stories he read by recreating them in form of cartoons. With good knowledge of human anatomy his illustrations graduated to being realistic in nature. With constant exploration of various mediums his love for art became more intense. Having worked primarily in charcoal and acrylic mediums he is constantly experimenting with more mediums and forms of art such as sculpting as he further explores the communal relationship between man and his space of existence.
Art has been a form of visual lingua franca which helps Adesina commune with his inner mind and environs. His art is an extension of his thoughts, experiences and interpersonal relationships with people within his community of existence per time. With so much attentiveness to his coexistence with animate and inanimate elements, he tell stories by reconceptualizing these influences in sometimes a metaphorical manner. In order to capture the identity of Adesinas subjects which are predominantly black people and their relationship to the significance of a moment, he has adopted the African art of body painting, poetry writing and iconography of animals. Owing to his interest in the evolution of African arts and culture in the contemporary age, this approach helps him create a harmonic union that establishes his thoughts on Africa’s past, present and future on issues such as colonization and the construction of a common global future. This is also a personal journey of soul-searching asking questions of where he is from, where he is and most importantly where he is going.
“I make art for the purpose of self-expression and documentation of moments and individuals that resonates with my soul. A journey of a lifetime.”
